The Kindness Community Market enables guests choice for needed food, choosing from a variety of shelf-stable foods, meats, fresh produce, and frozen, and dairy products. Guests can access the pantry once per week and obtain food based on their household size.

All of our critical services and programming are entirely supported by generous financial and in-kind donations from area businesses, individuals and various regional grant resources.

Food Delivery

Home Delivery Meal Service

With staff and dedicated volunteers, we provide weekly meals to individuals across Waldo County who are 55 and older, have no transportation or have significant medical issues. Meals can also be provided for a short term medical condition for 8 weeks.

We average over

150 deliveries per week.

Emergency

Food

We can supply supplemental groceries to individuals on an emergency basis as needed. Guests can qualify for an emergency box once per month up to 2 months to assist them in a transition. They can then transfer to our Biweekly Food Box delivery for up to 8 weeks.

Evening Meal Service

We also partner with local restaurants and catering companies to provide fully prepared meals for working families on a weekly basis. The meals feed an average family of four.

The average median income of these families is $48,640 annually. 80% of these families do not qualify for any type of public assistance, yet 72% of them report they are concerned about basic household needs such a food, housing, childcare, healthcare, and heat.

This program usually runs from December through March.

Help Yourself Shelves at MaineHealth Centers

We have partnered with Maine Health to provide food access points in local health centers.

This program increases our reach across the county for those in need. By providing healthy shelf stable food products and access to fresh local vegetables, Belfast Food Kitchen in partnership with Maine Health, promotes wellness while combating hunger in our communities.

Children's Food Programs

When school is in session, we sponsor and support HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger):

The High School Alternative Education program (Vikings Alternative, V-ALT for short) coordinates this program as part of their project-based curriculum. V-Alt students (grades 9-12) unload deliveries, organize the pantry, take inventory, and pack and deliver the bags of food to K-5 students each week.

The program provides a weekend bag of food that contains two breakfast, three lunch/dinner meals, as well as snacks, that young children can prepare and eat independently.

We also support a school food pantry that middle and high school students can access to obtain food and personal hygiene items. We have recently added monthly produce distributions, accessible to all RSU 20 families.

Farm Box Program

In partnership with Daybreak Growers Alliance, Belfast Soup Kitchen is a farm box pick up site. This initiative aims to make locally grown, organic food more accessible to local families. Daybreak Box subscribers should set personal preferences for veggies, meats and grocery items, an algorithm will build your box based on your preference settings and harvest for the week. You'll be able to further customize your delivery by swapping and adding products during the customization window which runs from Tuesdays around 5pm until Thursday at 11am the week prior to box delivery. Daybreak Growers Alliance uses CSAware software to allow for online purchasing of the products grown by 70+ farming and food partners. Choose a Box, select add-ons for staple grocery items and get access to 300+ Maine grown local and organic foods that you can add a-la-carte the week before your delivery. Sign up for our Farm Box CSA subscription here.

Biweekly Food Box Delivery

Guests can receive a bi-weekly food box consisting of shelf stable food items delivered to their home. To qualify for this service, a family or individual must meet TEFAP requirements and have significant barriers that prevent them from accessing the Kindness Community Market in person. We will provide referral information for additional resources that can help mitigate the circumstances surrounding food insecurity. Required follow up contact will occur every 8 weeks.

The Diaper Closet
Because all babies deserve clean diapers

Diapers are one of the most costly items when raising a child. An infant requires 10-12 diapers a day, and an older toddler uses an average of 8-10 diapers a day – and that number can increase if the child is sick. Lack of access to clean diapers can impede a parents ability to work and attend school, as most childcare facilities require the parent to provide diapers.

We offer a Diaper Closet to any parent/guardian in need. Families can collect items from the Diaper Closet twice a month, and we offer a range of items including formula, diapers, baby wipes, and more. To enroll in this program, please visit the Kindness Community Market or call 338-4845, option 4.
